Gasoline tax hikes are out but sales and income tax increases are still in.
That is what Senate conferees proposed today in an effort to break the budget stalemate.

(( In the first day of the state's special budget session, the Senate offered what they described as "an enormous sacrifice."
Senate negotiators offered to drop their proposed gasoline tax increase thereby giving up on their hopes of providing one-point-six billion dollars for new road construction.

They say they will continue to fight for a sales and income tax increase so that the state can pour more money into public education.

The problem is everywhere.
If you look in your backyard or you're out driving you likely see plenty of deer.

Here in the city of Martinsville there are a lot of wooded areas near residential neighborhoods.
With that brings a lot of deer.

As a result, city council decided last June to allow the bowhunting of deer within city limits.
The program began this fall and since September the city has issued 48 permits and hunters have killed 33 deer.

So far, it has had very little impact on the number of accidents involving deer.
Statistics provided by the city show those incidents are actually up.
But city officials say give it time. They point out there have been very few complaints about the program.

In fact, there have been no major incidents and that may be because of several safety precautions.
Hunters must first obtain a state and city permit, can only hunt from an elevated platform, and must receive permission from the landowner before going on their property.

Jean, the program is set to expire April first. City Council will decide Tuesday whether to renew it for another year.

Burlington Industries recently got a new owner. Soon it will get a new name.
The bankrupt textile maker was bought out last summer.
Soon Burlington will be combined with another textile company and given a new name-- International Textile Group.

Kristy Hahn was actually visiting her mother-in law, when a 25-pound bobcat attacked her in the family's basement. The cat bit her on the neck and scratched her arm, back and shoulders before her husband threw a can of vegetables at it and scared it away.

The bobcat was still in the basement when animal control officers shot and killed it. Hahn believes it may have gotten in through an opening used by the family's pet cats. The bobcat is now being tested for rabies and Hahn says she expects to get the results Friday.

An armed bank robber is still on the loose in central Virginia.

The suspect robbed this Suntrust Bank in the Graves Mill shopping center around 9:30 this morning.
He escaped on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.. police were on the scene quickly with a helicopter and tracking dog but could not find him.
These are photographs from the bank surveillance cameras.. the robber is a black man, weighing about 225 to 250 pounds. He was wearing a blue jacket with white lining and blue jeans.
Anyone with information should call their local police.

It took two departments and nearly 30 firefighters to control the fire.

The Tarheels are back in the NCAA Tourney after a two year absence, and considered by many to be the most dangerous team in the tournament.
Roanoke native Steve Robinson has played a big part in the Heels' resurgence Travis Wells has more on the UNC assistant.

Now 45 year old Steve Robinson makes his home in Chapel Hill where he is in his 9th season of work with Roy Williams. Together they've begun the process of putting Carolina Basketball back on the map.

With nearly two and half decades on the sidelines, Robinson is quick to point out the changes in the game and the players.

Steve's parents, Alexander and Lizzie still reside in Northwest Roanoke. They'll be pulling loudly for the Heels against Air Force and the Falcons Princeton type offense on Thursday night.
