[TAKE MAP FS] Officiers were called to a home on Whispering Pines Road west of Danville around 1:30 yesterday afternoon for a fight.
According to deputies, after a brief conversation, 51-year old Allen Lee Carter pulled a knife and "became agressive" towards the deputies.

The officers sprayed him three times with pepper spray, but say Carter continued to approach them, and eventually lunged at them. One of the deputies, then fatally shot Carter. Virginia State Police have taken over the investigation, and the two deputies have been placed on administrative leave WITH pay. So far, their names have not been released.

It happened along the north bound lanes near mile marker 124 just before 11 o'clock. Officials responded to ten different brush fires along a two-mile stretch. Firefighters from Montgomery and Roanoke Counties were called in to help, along with the Department of Forestry. A cause has not yet been determined, but officials believe the fires started when a tractor trailer lost a tire. One lane was closed while firefighters extinguished the blazes. Traffic was backed up for miles, but no accidents were reported.
