The blaze at the Bryant Salvage Company in Madison Heights was first reported around seven tonight-

Tightly-packed bales of paper and cardboard inside the main storage building caught fire and were burning out of control.
Crews spent more than an hour attacking the flames from the ground and the air before getting the fire contained.


Individual bales had to be moved out by forklift while firefighters attacked the blaze.

That may be hard to believe since Virginia Tech has 69 parking lots and over 13-thousand parking spaces.
But with more than 20-thousand parking permits issued students say the problem is real.

Virginia Tech says on most days there is actually enough parking, it's the convenience factor that's the problem.
The university also expects more students and more construction in the next five to ten years and therefore is looking into whether several parking garages are the answer.

Roanoke Fire and E-M-S began search and rescue training this week at the old Heironimus Warehouse. The 40-thousand square foot building is currently up for sale, but the owners decided to let the department use it for training in the meantime. Bedford County authorities say they've caught one of the dogs suspected in a horse attack earlier this week.

Tater, a four year old miniature horse was attacked by what appeared to be two pitbulls Sunday evening, while roaming in his owner's pasture. Animal control officers say they picked up one of the dogs last night at the Hardy Road Mobile Home park, after getting a call that it was attacking another dog. However, Tater's owner, Carol Simmons was not able to identify the pitbull as one of the dogs that attacked him. Officers say the pitbull will be put down, and that the case will remain open until they find the other dog.

The world's first drive-in cinema for snow mobilers opened there recently. The outdoor theater is the new home to a Finnish film festival. The first movie shown at the theater was a Norwiegan short film. More than 14 snowmobiles and 100 people gathered for the drive-in's opening. (------------)
