After more than 12 hours, firefighters are still on the scene of a blaze at Bryant Salvage Company in Madison Heights.

Tightly-packed bales of paper and cardboard inside the main storage building caught fire and were burning out of control.
Crews spent more than an hour attacking the flames from the ground and the air before getting the fire contained.


Individual bales had to be moved out by forklift while firefighters attacked the blaze.

Authorities believe the fire started near the compactor area inside, but aren't sure how.
Amherst County firefighters got help from the Lynchburg Fire Department which provided three trucks as well as manpower.

House Republicans say they see light at the end of the tunnel, and are predicting a budget compromise by next week when another vote is scheduled.

Some Republicans say they have enough votes to pass a bill that raises almost a billion dollars in taxes.
The bill would boost the state sales tax by half a penny and add thirty cents to the price cigarettes.
The Senate has agreed to drop its push for an income tax hike if the House passes the plan.
But many Republicans say the Senate needs to do more.

First Sergeant Steven Burnette, from Galax is among several soldiers of the 9-46th Transportation company that finally arrived in the U-S on Tuesday.

He is now in Fort Dix, New Jersey awaiting de-mobilization.
The soldiers were in Iraq for more than a year and much longer than anticipated.

Congressmen Rick Boucher had to help get them home. Now he's fighting for their four days off at Easter.
Boucher's office says the soldiers were promised the days off and many family members are currently en route to New Jersey, but the leave was cancelled yesterday afternoon.

Bedford County authorities say one of the dogs suspected in a horse attack earlier this week will be put down.

Tater, a four year old miniature horse was attacked by what appeared to be two pitbulls Sunday evening, while roaming in his owner's pasture. Animal control officers say they picked up one of the dogs last night at the Hardy Road Mobile Home park, after getting a call that it was attacking another dog. However, Tater's owner, Carol Simmons was not able to identify the pitbull as one of the dogs that attacked him. Officers say the pitbull will be put down, and that the case will remain open until they find the other dog.

In Lynchburg, the future of an old fire station is in the hands of a new owner.

Station Number Four closed in 1991 and it's been a private residence for the past ten years.
It recently was featured on H-G-T-V's "Building Character" show.
The firehouse.. which still has the pole in the master bedroom.. was auctioned off yesterday.
Graphic designer Nancy Marion bought it for 86-thousand dollars.
Marion's not sure what her plans are for the building.

A Montgomery County judge will decide if the media will be allowed in the courtroom during the trial of Marcus Vick and two other Tech football players.

Vick, wide receiver Brenden Hill and running back Mike Imoh are charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
All three are accused of giving teenage girls alcohol and taking pictures of them as they stripped.
Marcus Vick is also accused of having sex with a 15 year old girl.

Defense Attorneys and the Commonwealth's Attorney do not want the media at the trial because they do not want the identity of the victims revealed.
Lawyers for the media argued the case is of national and local interest and involves grown men.

A former Roanoke department store is now the site for emergency personnel training.

Roanoke Fire and E-M-S began search and rescue training this week at the old Heironimus Warehouse. The 40-thousand square foot building is currently up for sale, but the owners decided to let the department use it for training in the meantime. The month-long training focuses on what officials call the three main principles of a successful interior rescue operation -- leadership, teamwork and discipline.
