A Roanoke man is in critical condition after being shot last night.

The shooting happened in the 500 block of Rutherford Avenue just after seven o'clock.
Police arrived to find 22 year old Claude Benson Harper lying in the middle of the street with a gunshot wound to the face.
Harper was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial hospital where he is listed in critical condition.
Witnesses say the incident stemmed from an earliler fight at Loudon Park.
No arrests have been made

A Grayson County woman is headed to prison for her son's murder.
Using an "Alford plea"- -that is: not admitting guilt, Cynthia Davis, nonetheless PLED guilty to felony murder and two counts of felony child abuse and neglect. Police say Davis and her former boyfriend, Dennis Schermerhorn (shimmer-horn), are responsible for the disappearance last year of Davis' 5-year old son Logan Bowman.

The 37-year old Davis was supposed to go on trial next week.

In making the plea, she acknowledged the evidence against her would be enough to warrant a conviction. She was sentenced to a total of 50-years in prison with 35 years suspended. Schermerhorn is expected to go to trial next month.

State police say they pulled over Barney B. Cawthorne for an expired registration Thursday. But once the 38-year old stopped his car police noticed several containers of chemicals inside. A police spokesman wouldn't identify the chemicals ,but says they were of the type associated with making methamphetamine, also known as "crank."
Nearby residents were kept from their homes for several hours as a D-E-A team removed the chemicals and a state police bomb technician and robot detonated a suspicious-looking item taken from the car.

Questions that residents began asking last month when the city of Bedford revealed the old city landfill was leaking.
Tests conducted on several nearby wells showed some contamination.
The city then installed a filtration system to fix the problem and officials hoped that would the ease fears in the neighborhood.

The five coldwater hatcheries are in Smyth, Bath, Nelson, Craig, and Wythe Counties, and all are now open to the public seven-days a week, free of charge.

A Canadian humanitarian worker is believed to be okay- after his kidnapping in Iraq. But now, new information says it appears an American has also been taken hostage.
Television footage taken yesterday shows the prisioner in the back seat of a car on the main highway in western Baghdad where fighting took place yesterday.
It's believed the footage was taked yesterday.
The prisioner told the cameraman his name and said he was part of a convoy that was attacked.
The car then sped away with him still in the back seat.

The kidnappings are just some of a recent string of events that have rocked the region. The U-S military estimates at least 40 Iraqis are dead after a battle north of Baghdad overnight. An accident yesterday in Floyd County killed one man and injured two children.
State Troopers say the driver of a pickup truck tried to make a left turn across Route 221 near Woods Store and pulled into the path of an oncoming car.
A passenger in the car, 24-year old Efrian Jacome Cabrera, was killed.
The driver of the car, Nicole L. Hunley of Copper Hill, was not injured, but her two daughters, ages 9 and 4, were.
The driver of the truck, 26 year old Daniel Jacob McLaughlin of Charlottesville, is charged with failure to yield the right of way.

The two men hung there for more than an hour, while rescue workers prepared to get them down. Shell said everytime he and Potter moved, the lift started to roll. So they couldn't move. By the time they were finally rescued, Shell said he'd lost all feeling in his legs. The two went back to work after the incident.

Officers raided a Las Vegas drug-testing lab Thursday as part of their investigation. Federal agents seized results and samples of drug tests on a number of major league baseball players. Agents wouldn't comment on which results they took, but a federal subpoena sought test results from Barry Bonds, Gary Sheffield and Jason Giambi -among others. The raid is part of a grand jury investigation stemming from indictments handed down in February against four-men for allegedly distributing steroids to professional athletes.

Last night, a thousand volunteers brought the story of Jesus' last few hours- to life on an Indiana stage. The play is believed to be one of the most spectacular re-enactments ever undertaken. It features a two-story 200-foot wide stage, waterfalls, horses and explosions. Mel Gibson and Oprah Winfrey reportedly came to see the powerful production.
