Despite 6 years of work by a legislative panel, efforts to choose a new state song are quickly fading. Eight finalists for a new state song have been chosen, but so far there's no winner.
The subcommittee's work is scheduled to end July 1st.
That would leave Virginia as the nation's only state without a state song. The panel used a contest to get new submissions, but a lawsuit, copyright issues, and politicking held up progress.
Virginia's old state song "Carry Me Back to Ole Virginny" was retired in 1997.
