Another 40 thousand acres could be added to Virginia's National Forests if a bill being considered by congress passes.
Congressman Rick Boucher and Senator John Warner introduced the bill last week. It would expand five existing wilderness areas in six counties - including parts of Brush Mountain in Montgomery and Craig Counties. Boucher says the designated areas are not suitable for commercial logging, but are great for recreation.

The proposal will likely include a sales tax increase, and an offer to cap the state's car tax reimbursements to localities. The full Senate and the House of Delegates could vote on the proposal Tuesday. Failure to enact a budget by June 30th, the end of the fiscal year, would force state government to effectively shut down.
