Taxes are going up for Franklin County residents.
The Board of Supervisors tonight passed a new budget with a four- to- three vote.
After "sharp" debate, supervisors voted to increase taxes by 53 cents - one cent lower than originally proposed.
The Board also voted NOT to grant Franklin County Speedway owner Whitey Taylor a permit to operate his race- track.
Supervisors say Taylor needs to fix the track's erosion problems.

A school bus carrying nine student and two teachers from Auburn High School slid off the road and onto its side around 8:15 this morning.
No one was seriously hurt, but the bus driver has been charged with reckless driving. 61 year old Bradford Charles Grems has also been suspended with pay.

That's according to the medical director for the state office of emergency services.

Dr. Cheryl Haas (Hoss) stepped down after learning the squad was under investigation for what one county official described as possibly "inappropriate" financial action.

The Rockbridge Co. Wildcats football team put another player in a UVa uniform today.
Wildcat junior Aaron Clark made a verbal commitment to play for Al Groh this afternoon.
Clark is a six six, 230 pounder who played tight end and defensive end this past year for coach Billy Mills in the Valley district.
Last year Rockbridge's Jon Kirchner signed with the Cavs.

Deng's dad says his son is making himself available for the NBA Draft, but will keep open his option of returning to school by not hiring an agent.
Aldo Deng also told The News & Observer in Raleigh that his son will attend classes at Duke this summer.

The annual "Take Pride in Smith Mountain Lake" day is being expanded this year, but organizers say it's not because there's more trash to pick up.

So instead of having an appreciation party following Saturday's cleanup, the party will be held on Sunday.
More than 700-volunteers took part last year.

The four koala joeys- two males, two females are making their debut.
The San Diego zoo is home to about 70 Koalas- the largest collection outside of Australia. Koalas survive soley on the leaves of eucalyptus trees.
