(STANDUP- Dr. Sean Kenniff/CBS NEWS/Miami, FL)

BUT THERE MAY SOON BE ANOTHER OPTION FOR PEOPLE SUFFERING WITH MACULAR DEGENERATION. AN INVESTIGATIONAL NEW DRUG IS TRYING TO STOP THE PROCESS WHERE IT STARTS.... IN THE BACK OF THE EYE.

(gfx)

IN THE MOST SERIOUS FORM OF THE DISEASE A CHEMICAL SIGNAL CALLED VEG-F, CAUSES ABNORMAL ARTERIES TO GROW OUT OF CONTROL, ON THE RETINA. THE NEW MEDICATION DEVELOPED BY GENENTECH -- ATTACKS THAT CHEMICAL SIGNAL, STOPPING THOSE ARTERIES FROM GROWING, AND PREVENTING NEW ONES FROM FORMING. DR. HALPERIN HOPES THIS NEW DRUG, IN CLINICAL TRIALS RIGHT NOW, MAY ACTUALLY REVERSE SOME OF THE BLINDNESS.
