Authorities will tell you the first seventy two hours of a murder investigation are crucial to solving the case.
So you can imagine the relief one Martinsville woman felt when police informed her they had finally made an arrest in her son's murder. [***News 7 @ 11 in Monitor***]

Jean, 19 year old Dion Hairston was gunned down nearly five years ago.

That changed when officers re-opened the investigation and finally put this cold case to rest.

That is when her teenage son was shot at the corner of Smith Road and Swanson Street in front of Albert Harris School.
Dion Hairston later died at the hospital. No arrests were made and until recently the case file was collecting dust.

Their work has led to charges against 27 year old Steven Turner and 24 year Marquise Grant.
Investigators won't say what led to the shooting, only that all three were friends at one time.

The five delegates and four senators ordered takeout Chinese food as they worked late into the night, trying to figure out how the state money will be spent.

And for the second straight week that winner was Vijay Singh. The 41 year old from Fiji torched the back nine at the HP Classic in New Orleans by playing the final eight holes in 7 under par. He shot a 29 on the back side and finished with a 63 and won it with this 25 foot birdie putt on the 18th holes. But little-known Joe Ogilvie almost forced a playoff. He needed to make this shot out of the bunker and he does everything, but knock it in the hole. Ogilvie finished tied for second with Phil Mickelson, while Singh pocketed $918 thousand dollars today, and now has a tour best $4 point 25 million this season.

In an effort to think outside the box, a Roanoke arts organization is mailing a box to potential donors.

Employees are stuffing what look like mini-pizza boxes with carpet samples and information. The kit is part of the Center in the Square's attempt to grab the public's attention and raise some money. Over the next two months Center needs to bring in 240-thousand dollars. Center bought the boxes and paid for the printing but everything else was donated. President Jim Sears says future mailers may include small gifts, like candy or cookies. The boxes will be mailed by Friday.
