The hold up occurred after one o'clock at the Lakeside Branch of B-B-and-T.
Investigators say a man told one of the tellers he had a gun and demanded money.
The suspect was described as a five foot nine, heavy set white man in his mid to late 40s.
Police say he was wearing a black suit with a cream-colored fedora- style hat.
He was last seen on foot headed toward East Main street and Electric Road.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Salem Police Department.

The secretary of a former Bedford County supervisor convicted of forgery is now being accused of stealing money from his company.
A Franklin County grand jury indicted Angela Hampton today on EIGHT charges, including embezzlement and attaining money under false pretense.

Authorities say Hampton embezzled thousands of dollars over a 20-month period from Dominion Fabricators, where she was a secretary for the owner, former Bedford County supervisor, Kirby Richardson.
Richardson pled guilty in March to forging public documents in Bedford County, though he said it was Hampton's idea.
He will be sentenced later this month.

May first was the deadline to notify Virginia Tech if your child was going to the school.
But school officials say, they've been unable to set tuition and fee rates for the fall - which has has a lot of parents and students worried.
Tech administrators say for the first time ever, they plan on making a lot of exceptions to the deadline as people try to figure out their financial aid situations.
The university is expecting a freshman class of 5-thousand next year.
That's 3-hundred more than last year.

The most recent discovery of buried waste near Roanoke's Public Works Service Center has produced a new settlement with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.
City officials say they believe the site of the proposed stadium and amphitheater is now "clean as a whistle."

Radford University Police are investigating a pair of arson cases in a single dormitory.
