Though Wyatt was briefly a candidate for the school board herself, she says her decision to abstain from today's vote was not a case of sour grapes.
She says she didn't support Wright, and felt it was improper for council to extend the deadline for applications, a decision that allowed Penn to put his name in the running.

Radford University's baseball team captain has been charged with identity theft. Federal court records indicate Shaun House has agreed to plead guilty- -after he graduates- -to a single conspiracy count. The senior from Chesapeake fraudulently obtained student loans- -the government says- -by forging the signature of a fellow student, making James Scruggs a co-signer on the loan- -unbeknownst to Scruggs. When the money came through, House allegedly used most of the funds to buy a Ford Explorer rather than for educational expenses. Coach Lew Kent says he was aware of the criminal investigation, but he did not know his third baseman had cut a deal with the government.

Lynchburg police are looking for the driver of a car that hit and killed a woman on the Route 29 Expressway early this morning.

Authorities say 36-year-old Renee Annette Jones of Rustburg was walking on the side of the road when she was hit.

A Martinsville man died in a fire early this morning.
Investigators say 59 year old Melvin Leon Davis was found in his burning mobile home on Webb Lane.
The cause is still under investiation. Meanwhile, MONTGOMERY COUNTY investigators are trying to figure out what started a fatal fire there.

61 year old Barbara Gray died when a fire broke out at her home just before midnight last night. She lived on Friendship Road near Shawsville. When firefighters arrived Gray was still in the house, but they were unable to get inside. Investigators do not believe the fire was suspicious. The house is a total loss.

Pittsylvania County authorities are investigating an apparent drowning last night. It happened around eight o'clock off Highway 57. Officials say 53- year- old Thomas Wayne Cook was fishing with another man on a pond near Callands' (CAL-ands) Courthouse when he fell in. His body has been sent to the medical examiner for an autopsy.
