A woman is killed in a hit and run accident in Lynchburg early this morning.

Few details have been released, but Lynchburg Police say a 36 year old female was on Route 29 around 1 o'clock this morning when she was hit by a car. It happened in the southbound lanes between Grace and Kemper Street. Police are not releasing the victim's name at this time. Officials say they're still interviewing witnesses and looking for the car.

A house fire in Montgomery County leaves one woman dead.
The sheriff's office says it received a 9-1-1 call around midnight reporting a fire at 5- 69 Friendship Road, about five miles from Shawsville. Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control, but discovered the woman's body in the back upper area of the house. The victim has been taken to the Medical Examiner's Office in Roanoke for an autopsy. Authorites have NOT released her name. No word yet on what caused the fire.

A judge has set a trial date for the Alleghany County man accused of beating a wheelchair bound man to death.

22-year-old William Riley Richardson was in a Craig County courtroom yesterday trying to be released on bond before his trial. A judge denied his request. The grand jury certified five-charges, including first degree murder, malicious wounding and attempted arson. The judge set Richardson's jury trial for September first and second. Richardson is accused of beating 65-year-old Richard Sarver to death in April after attacking an ex-girlfriend.

Lynchburg police peacefully ended a standoff yesterday with a man found walking nearly naked in a city park.

The suspect was spotted walking in Peaksview Park yesterday around seven A-M wearing just underwear and socks.
Police finally caught up with him a few hours later and evacuated that portion of the park after the man started threatening himself and police.
After negotiations failed to convince the man to surrender, a tactical team moved in and subdued him with a shot from a non-lethal rifle.

Washington and Lee University moved a building to make sure its newest construction project stays on track.

Instead of demolishing the aging structure, the school decided to move it about a hundred yards away. That meant a major logistical challenge to pick up the fragile building, and move it SLOWLY over a bumpy route.

A local group in Roanoke will soon have new life, as it moves into its new home.

Members of the Roanoke Council of Gardens Club dodged a few raindrops as they broke ground yesterday on a new facility on Colonial Avenue.
The club had been searching for new housing after selling its Fairacres plot in South Roanoke.
The new building will be a six-thousand square foot facility with rooms for meetings and entertaining.
It'll include modern heating and air-conditioning, something the club's OLD home didn't have.
The club is hoping to move into its new home in a year, and members are anxious to begin landscaping.

Two deputies have been cleared of any wrong doing in a deadly Pittsylvania County shooting. Special prosecutor Joel Branscom announced his decision yesterday afternoon.

Branscom says according to evidence, interviews and the state police investigation - Corporal Harris Silverman was justified when he shot 51-year-old Allen Lee Carter on March 27th. Pittsylvania County Deputies were called to a home in Axton - after family members said Carter was threatening his brother with a knife. Branscom found that Corporal Silverman and Deputy Shannon Edwards did everything in their power to calm Carter, and subdue him with other means, before Carter finally charged Silverman with a knife.

County Administrator Larry Moore says the county needs to do something to bring in revenue and "B-POL" could bring in more than 40-thousand dollars. Citizens will have a chance to voice their opinions at the supervisors meeting next week, May 18th at seven o'clock.
