Elsewhere in Iraq, rebel cleric Muktada al Sadr managed to slip past U-S tanks and checkpoints to travel from Najaf to nearby Kufa, where he delivered his weekly sermon. He blasted the U.S. and claimed the beheading of American Nicholas Berg was fabricated to draw attention away from the Iraqi prisoner abuse scandal.
In Najaf and Karbala, al Sadr's forces fought fierce battles with U-S
troops. At a vast cemetary in Najaf, fighters are said to be hiding in
underground catacombs.
The U-S military had hoped to avoid incursions into such holy sites, but the offensive there appears to indicate it's patience is running out.
And in a further heightening of the tenion, al Sadr's men also warned
U.S. forces to stay out of the city of Nasiriya. The war here is far
from over.
