A Blue Ridge man accused of killing his cousin may get over 40 years in prison for the crime.

Yesterday, 48-year-old Milon (my-lan) Rube Goins pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of second degree murder in the August 2003 death of David Bowman. The men were cousins and witnesses say in the moments leading up to the shooting everyone was joking around.
The family has been torn apart by the murder.

Montgomery County teachers can expect to receive a larger pay increase, courtesy of the state budget.

Now that the state budget numbers are in, the county has learned it is getting two-point-six million dollars more than expected for its schools.
Local leaders say extra funds will help the board fund a 7 percent increase in salaries.
That compares to raises of about 2 percent over the last two years.
