Memorial Day has become the un-official start to summer and Smith Mountain Lake officials say more people are hitting the lake early this year.
[DOUBLE BOXES=Myranda & Jennifer/BAM;]

But as Jennifer Wishon reports a fatal accident on the lake this holiday weekend has some people thinking twice about safety. Myranda, Friday evening a 23- year- old was killed instantly after his jet ski collided with a bass boat.

The jet ski operator had only been on the lake for a few minutes before the accident happened. An unfortunate reminder that recreation doesn't come without risk.

And when the waters are crowded there's less room for error. Game wardens suggest boaters use the same common sense they use on the road-- Travel on the right side of the lake, be courteous, wear a life preserver and if alcohol is a part of your recreation always have a designated driver, because drinking alcohol on a boat is different than drinking on land.
