The line of storms is moving quickly and in some cases, leaving a destructive path.

Perhaps the hardest-hit town is Santa Rosa, Missouri, where three people were killed, and eight others injured.
Tornadoes also did some damage in Kansas, with over seven farm homes damaged before the storm system moved to Nebraska.

Memorial Day has become the un-official start to summer and Smith Mountain Lake officials say more people are hitting the lake early this year.

But as Jennifer Wishon reports a fatal accident on the lake this holiday weekend has some people thinking twice about safety.
Myranda, Friday evening a 23- year- old was killed instantly after his jet ski collided with a bass boat.

The jet ski operator had only been on the lake for a few minutes before the accident happened.
An unfortunate reminder that recreation doesn't come without risk.

Many people are in town for a Memorial Day vacation, but those who frequent the waters say they're getting congested.

Game wardens suggest boaters use the same common sense they use on the road--
Travel on the right side of the lake, be courteous, wear a life preserver and if alcohol is a part of your recreation always have a designated driver, because drinking alcohol on a boat is different than drinking on land.

Alcohol-related offenses on the lake have declined over the past few years, but Martin says they're still a problem - as are boaters who completely disregard the law.
That's why, weather permitting on Memorial Day, the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries plans to do something it hasn't done since the early 80's- monitor boaters at Smith Mountain Lake using a "float plane."

That's what happened this afternoon on I-81 west of Salem, near the Roanoke-Montgomery County line.
Two pickup trucks spun out of control and hit a guardrail.
No one appeared seriously hurt, but it was enough to back up southbound traffic for a couple of miles.

Roanoke County police say they mean business in targeting drunk drivers, promising an aggressive approach in finding and arresting them.
They conducted two DUI checkpoints last night,

In addition, the checkpoints led to four charges for driving under suspension.

Fire gutted a home in Roanoke this morning.

It started shortly after ten at this home on Beech Street.
Firefighters say the fire started in the back bedroom which was engulfed in flames when they arrived.
The renter was home at the time but was able to escape unharmed.
Officials estimate the fire caused more than 100-thousand-dollars in damage to the home and its contents.
A cause has not yet been determined.

Danville police are investigating an overnight shooting outside a car wash.
Police say 23-year-old Dexter Lipford was shot several times at Jay Boy's Car Wash. Lipford told police he did not see AND does not know who shot him. His wounds are not considered life-threatening.

The 88th running of the Indianapolis 500 got off to a slow start. The drivers got in 29 laps before rain delayed the event by 2 hours. The Indy 500 finally resumed around 4:30. Robbie Gordon left Indy before the race resumed after the delay to try and make the Coke 600.
