((The intended target of the suicide bomber was US troops, but the only people to die when the bomb went off were Iraqis. THE CAR BOMB near THE US MILITARY BASE WAS JUST ONE PART OF A LONG DAY OF BLOODSHED IN IRAQ. It began with the assassination of another senior Iraqi official, a member of the Ministry of Education. His cousin witnessed the attack... THREE MASKED MEN BROKE INTO THE HOUSE, SHE SAYS, TWO OF THEM STARTED FIRING AT RANDOM, WHILE THE THIRD SHOT HIM DEAD.

It's the second senior Iraqi government figure to be assassinated in as many days. THEN...a direct hit on coalition headquarters in Baghdad...nobody was hurt, but a rocket slammed into the roof of the Republican Palace -- now home to chief US administrator Paul Bremer. In two weeks' time, the violence here will no longer be his problem... but in Washington, the US Administration pledged to stay the course.
