Yes, you heard right, a black bear made a house call tonight.
It happened just after nine o'clock at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Rocky Mount. [***NEWS 7 @ 11 IN MONITOR***]

Several people actually witnessed it and after the initial shock wore off several people sprung into action.

This was the scene shortly after ten this evening when authorities brought the bear out.
The incident began a hour earlier when the bear walked through an automatic door in front of the hospital.

The officer then shut the door and waited for additional units to arrive.
Authorities then made the decision to shoot the bear rather than tranquilize it.
An officer shot it once with a rifle and then twice with a handgun.
Witnesses say the black bear was roughly six to eight feet tall and weighed anywhere between 150 to 200 pounds.

Hospital officials say the bear traveled about 50 yards through the hospital but was never near any patients.

The woman suspected of last week's bank robbery has turned herself in.

Cynthia Leatrice Porter is being held without bond on robbery charges in the Amherst County jail.

Deputies say she held up the B-B-and-T in Madison Heights last Friday, claiming to have a gun and bombs. Porter surrendered to deputies about four this afternoon. She is from Florida, but authorities say she has family in the area.

Administrators will be taking up several issues that could lead to major changes, including an overhaul of the school resource program and revisions to the student handbook.

Witnesses say a motorcyclist doing tricks crashed into a truck in Roanoke. Both drivers were taken to the hospital after the fiery wreck.

The motorcycle was heading east on Orange Avenue.
Witnesses told investigators the motorcycle was speeding and "possibly doing a wheelie" before it collided with the pickup.
The driver of the motorcycle was thrown from the wreck. The bike burst into flames.
Both men were taken to the hospital, but their injuries did not appear life- threatening.
Police say charges are pending against the driver of the motorcycle.

Police officers were suspicious of Scott Peterson from the first night of his wife Laci's disappearance, but a lack of testing done at the crime scene may lead to missed evidence.

One officer testified today that Peterson's alibi seemed suspicious, even though he produced a parking receipt to prove he was not at home when his wife disappeared .
Peterson was unable to answer some of the officers' questions and became agitated, throwing a flashlight and cursing.
Another officer said that a crumpled rug, a wet mop and a pile of dirty towels did not seem suspicious in an otherwise tidy house. The Peterson home was not immediately tested for blood and body fluids because the police technician didn't have the proper equipment to complete the tests. Peterson is charged with murdering his wife and unborn son.

A Federal Judge has affirmed a claim by the Department of Agriculture to classify batter-coated french fries as a fresh vegatable. Most other kinds of french fries had been on the fresh-vegetable list since 1996. However, the department of Agriculture maintains that the classification pertains only to commercial rules, NOT nutrition.

In game five of the NBA finals, up 3 games to 1, Detroit leads 94 to 68 with 6:00 left in the game. One of the many big stories for the Pistons has been the play of Ben Wallace. He entered the fourth and final quarter with 14 points and 13 rebounds. IF the Pistons win tonight, they capture the title for this fist time since 1990 and coach Larry Brown becomes the first coach in the history of the game to win an NBA title and an NCAA crown.
