Authorities say a full grown black bear was shot and killed after it wandered into Franklin Memorial hospital last night.

This was the scene shortly after ten o-clock last night when authorities brought the black bear out.
The incident began an hour earlier when the bear walked through an automatic door in front of the hospital.

The officer then shut the door and waited for additional units to arrive.
Authorities then made the decision to shoot the bear rather than tranquilize it.
An officer shot it once with a rifle and then twice with a handgun.
Witnesses say the black bear was roughly six to eight feet tall and weighed anywhere between 150 to 200 pounds.

Hospital officials say the bear traveled about 50 yards through the hospital, but was never near any patients.

Some R-B-X retirees say they feel like they've been betrayed now that the company plans to cancel their retirement benefits.

In federal court Monday, a judge upheld R-B-X Corporation's motion to terminate all retiree benefits -- including health insurance and prescription cards.
By doing that, the bankrupt company can use the money to pay off it debts.

Cynthia Leatrice Porter is held without bond on robbery charges in the Amherst County jail.

Deputies say she held up the B-B-and-T in Madison Heights last Friday, claiming to have a gun and bombs.
Porter surrendered to deputies about four yesterday afternoon.
She is from Florida, but authorities say she has family in the area.

The school year is almost over but it will be a busy summer in the Roanoke school system.
Administrators will be taking up several issues that could lead to major changes, including an overhaul of the school resource program and revisions to the student handbook.

They are a group of citizen's who formed to address safety problems in Roanoke schools.

Blacksburg is hoping an old piece of route 460 will lead the way to economic development.

V-DOT is in the process of giving Blacksburg about 34 acres of land that used to be an old exit ramp.
The Blacksburg Partnership wants to turn the green space into a park with three soccer fields and two softball fields.
The group wants to lease about six acres of the land to a hotel or restaurant to pay for the two million dollar project.
The town council still needs to approve the project.
If approved the park could be open by the spring of 2006.

The woman Zachary Bryant had been staying with in Roanoke was the one who identified him as a suspect in the vandalism of a historic church last January.
Rebecca Manning had heard Bryant talking about knocking over pews and busting out windows.

Yesterday, Bryant admitted to vandalizing Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, opening himself to a maximum sentence of as much as 25 years.
Back in January, police had nothing to go on, until Manning provided the tip that led to Bryant's arrest.
Though the suspect- -now 23- -denied it at first, Bryant's story began to unravel.
Then he turned over his shoes, and they matched an imprint left in the chemical spray of a fire extinguisher.

A local man faces a life sentence after being found guilty yesterday of murdering his landlord.

Prosecutors say Majeed shot and killed 42 year Christopher Hanes at the victim's Roanoke County home last July.
