Booker John Henry Hutson went missing yesterday morning after the car that he was believed to be riding in was washed away by a rain swollen stream on Meeks Road in southern Henry County. The body was discovered 3 miles downstream near the route 87 bridge. Police believe Hutson was with his ex-wife, 61 year old Louise Fuller, as they delivered newspapers for the Greensboro News and Record. Fuller was found dead at the scene.

Lynchburg police say an officer who pepper-sprayed a black college professor during a traffic stop last year acted within the law and within department guidelines.

Dorothy Smith-Akubue (ah-koo-BOO-ee) claimed she was mistreated when she was stopped for going 57 miles per hour in a 25-mile-per-hour zone October 18th.
But an internal review that was forwarded to the Justice Department found that Officer J.E. Keene was right to use force when Akubue resisted arrest.
She did not appeal her conviction.

Grayson County authorities are investigating a case of child abuse. Twin County Medical Center called police Tuesday night about a less than one month old baby boy with severe head trauma. A 17 year old male has been arrested and charged with felony child abuse. Investigators won't release the teen's name, but they do say he IS related to the baby boy. The baby was transported to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and is said to be slowly improving. The investigation is still underway and more charges could be coming.

A Carroll County man is in critical condition after being shot in the stomach wednesday night. Officers found Jessie James Hawks lying in the driveway of a home in the Cana Section of the county.

[TAKE LEFTWICH FS] Witnesses told investigators 41 year old Jimmy Haskell Leftwich shot Hawks and walked into the woods.
Leftwich was arrested on Pauls Creek Road and has been charged with malicious wounding and use of a firearm by a convicted felon. He's being held in the New River Regional Jail.

The Health Department tested the bear for rabies and the results came back negative. Game officials on the scene Tuesday night said the bear looked healthy, but requested a rabies test anyway to be certain. In these surveillance photos you can see the bear wandering the halls and a patron standing only a few feet from it. Game officials have issued warnings about feeding bears because it may lead to more close encounters.

Vaughn Furniture is laying off a hundred workers at plants in Stuart and Galax.
The company blames the cuts on foreign competition.
Meanwhile, the Virginia Employment Commission said today the state is growing jobs at an outstanding rate.
The Commonwealth boasted nearly 90-thousand more jobs in April compared to the same month in 2003.
That puts Virginia's job growth rate well above the national average.
More than half of the new jobs were created in Northern Virginia.
The Roanoke and Danville areas saw just a few hundred new jobs.
The Lynchburg and Bristol areas actually lost a few hundred.
