State police say a Pittsylvania County man died tonight when when his vehicle struck a tree. Police say 60 year old Charles Dilts Runyon of Chatham was driving on state route 649 near Climax when his Kia Sportage left the roadway and overcorrected before hitting the tree. Investigators say Runyon was not wearing a seat belt.

The district attorney and F-B-I have also launched investigations, but the chief says it doesn't look good. Miller was struck eleven times with a flashlight. Miller was arrested and jailed for investigation of auto theft, and police say he was treated at the hospital for quote, "a very minor abrasion to his face."

A man accused in a brutal assault in Blacksburg will be arraigned tomorrow morning. The victim was possibly raped and beaten so badly in the face she may have to undergo reconstuctive surgery.

The 23-year old woman, who police are not identifying was grabbed from behind by a stranger in downtown Blacksburg as she walked home. She was snatched in this alley behind main street where she was brutally beaten in the face and possibly raped. Police got a tip late yesterday evening which led them to their suspect almost exactly 24 hours after the attack.

But this year something will be missing - the race's defending champ. Each of the past four years - this terrier named Carley - dominated the event - winning four straight titles. Sadly, she passed away at her home in Christiansburg last December from heart failure at the age of eight. Just 10 days before she died Carley won another title at Terrier show. Tomorrow night a new Jack Russell champ will be crowned - but no one at the show will forget Carley's accomplishments.

((During April's running of the Advance Auto Parts 500, the Martinsville Speedway's concrete began to crumble in turn 3. That prompted Clay Campbell to expand his plans for new asphalt in the straights to include new concrete in the the turns, with one small alteration. At the exits of turns 2 and 4, the grooves of concrete will be extended about a hundred feet.
Clay:
The project should be completed in mid-July, and then Campbell will be faced with another decision--whether or not to grind the corners as he did in 2002. He's getting some high tech help from the track's new owner, International Speedway Corporation.
Clay:
The construction at Nascar's shortest facility isn't limited to inside the grandstands. The railroad tracks behind the backstretch will be on the move in the very near future, making way for additional expansion.

The relocation of the railroad tracks is about a two month project, which means it should be completed by the October race weekend. Travis Wells, News 7 Sports.))

Zoo visitors go ape in Germany when a gorilla escapes his cage-

it happened at the Berlin zoo.
Eight year old gorilla, Bokito- climbed over the top of the glass wall surrounding his cage.
While Bokito strolled, zoo goers ran for cover.
An 18 year old who was visiting the zoo captured this video-
Two zookeepers rushed in and began walking with Bokito .. when the gorilla decided he wanted to take a break and sit down on a park bench.
Zookeeprs were able to get Bokito back into an enclosure and no one was hurt.
