It is more cost-efficient, easy to use and it has the same functionality as a regular phone.
THE COST, ABOUT 15 DOLLARS A MONTH.
MICHAEL POWEEL/FCC CHAIRMAN: I THINK IT'S PROBABLY THE SINGLE MOST DRAMATIC LEAP IN TELEPHONE TECHNOLOGY, EXCEPT FOR THE VERY INVENTION ITSELF.
THE INVENTION THAT MAKES THIS TECHNOLOGY WORK IS A CONVERTER BOX-- WITH BROADBAND. CUSTOMERS CAN HAVE ANY PHONE NUMBER WITH ANY AREA CODE THEY CHOOSE. IF THERE'S AN INTERNET HOOK UP ... THERE'S PHONE SERVICE.
Carol Wilner/AT and T VP Government Affairs: I think it's a great thing for competition. Probably the best thing we've seen come along, because the network costs are so low you get these wonderful scrappy entrepreneurial software companies who are basically inventing competitive service.
MOST OFFERING THIS PHONE SERVICE AREN'T THE BIG GIANTS; IN FACT, MANY SAY THEY'RE TAKING A WAIT-AND-SEE APPROACH ON THE TECHNOLOGY. ONE THAT ISN'T -- THE INVENTOR OF THE TELEPHONE AT&T.
"We are in early because we do have the largest global IP network and it is the most powerful and most reliable I-P network in the world."
MAGGIE SKLAR CERTAINLY THINKS SO. WITH INTERNET CALLING AND A CELL PHONE, SHE ASKS WHY WOULD ANYONE EVER REVERT TO DIALING THE OLD-FASHIONED WAY.
EVEN WITH ALL THE PLUSES THERE ARE MINUSES - 911 IS AN ISSUE BECAUSE ON VOICE OVER INTERNET IT'S MORE DIFFICULT TO LOCATE A CALLER AND IF YOUR INTERNET SERVICE GOES OUT SO DOES YOUR PHONE. ))
