"EVEN THOUGH WE SPENT SIGNIFICANT TIME MAKING SURE THAT WE WERE CROSSING AT A POINT WHERE THERE WERE NO MAJOR HAZARDS YOU NEVER KNOW."
For Cassini getting through those rings was perhaps the most difficult maneuver of it's two-point-two billion mile trip. Had it been hit by a particle, even the size of pea...the ship could have sustained major damage.

(Nats: Control Room)

That's why mission scientists nervously watched like proud parents as the little probe did something equivalent to slowing down and then merging onto a freeway--that freeway is the orbit around Saturn...and to Nasa's delight it went off without a hitch.

Cassini is now but 12-thousand 500 miles above the planet's cloud tops--and the pictures being sent back are nothing short of amazing.
