Tonight perhaps some hopeful news. The Al-Jazeera T-V station is quoting an Iraqi militant group as saying that Hassoun (hah-SOON') is safe-- That despite weekend reports that he'd been killed.

A Tazewell County Sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man after he apparently rammed the officer with his car.

It happened near the community of Pounding Mill where Sergeant Jonathan Lowe was responding to a domestic disturbance . The sheriff says after Lowe put a woman in the front seat of his cruiser, 25 year old Brian Dunford got into his pickup and struck the cruiser broadside as Lowe was getting in. Lowe's legs were pinned in his car door, and then he fired twice, hitting Dunford in the chest.

Dunford died at Clinch Valley Medical Center. Lowe suffered a broken leg, and is listed in stable condition at a hospital in Tennessee. State Police are investigating.

Now there's a fear the smoke and heat could damage a mountaintop observatory.
Crews have used bulldozers and fire retardent around the Mount Graham International Observatory.
It's home to two operating telescopes and the 120 million dollar Large Binocular Telescope.
The observatory does have a sprinkler system that would be turned on if flames come within a quarter mile.
Officials say only Arizona's summer rains will be able to put out the fires.

Danvile officials are investigating what they call a suspicious fire. Shortly before five a home on the 13-hundred block of Branch Street caught fire. The blaze was put out in about 10 minutes, although it did do heavy damage to the structure. Authorities say nobody was home at the time, and noone was injured. Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call the Danville Fire Department.

The 86th PGA Championship gets underway on August 12th in Koehler, Wisconsin. Ashley Plantation pro Chip Sullivan will tee it up in the event for the second straight year after qualifying thru the National Club Pro Championship.

Today he broke a record for the 100 meter for someone over 100.
Rabinowitz came in with a time of 28 point seven seconds. That's more than seven seconds faster than the previous record holder.
