Lightning appears to be the cause of a fire today at Smith Mountain Lake. Officials say lightning struck the roof of the 4-H center's nature facility around 3:30. The blaze was contained to the roof and caused about 10-thousand dollars in damage. Officials say no one was hurt.

Some 120- Army Reserve Soldiers with the 424th Transportation Division in Galax have been serving in Kuwait and Iraq for more than a year now. Today friends and family lined Main Street to welcome their heroes home.

Men and women with the 424th Transportation Company received a heroes welcome home Saturday. Some have been back since April - some 20 others remain overseas. But no matter where these soldiers are, their service has touched the hearts of many. Randall Higgins and his family turned out to wave their flags as the soldiers marched by. Of the next wave of soldiers to deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan it's estimated that more than 40- percent will be made up of Reservist and National Guard soldiers.

A Bassett man is charged with killing a neighbor with a piece of landscaping timber. The Henry County Sheriff's office says 24 year old Jerry Darnel Turner faces a second degree murder charge. He allegedly struck 53 year old Wesley Wendell Hairston with the timber during an argument last night. Both lived along the same road in Bassett.

The town of Hillsville is closer to getting back its rescue squad.

The squad was shutdown by the Board of Supervisors in May. Board members say the decision was based on citizen complaints, missed calls, personnel problems and the unauthorized use of a county vehicle. Now the town is trying to work WITH the county to restore some form of service. Board members say they will return the ambulances if the town will oversee the operation. In the meantime, Carroll E-M-S will continue to handle any emergency calls from Hillsville.

The county's first library opened its doors today. "Craig County Friends of the Library" was formed about three years ago and consists of about six families who helped carry-out the project. Danville police say a 14 year old boy is charged with breaking into a convenience store, and stealing cash, magazines, gum and novelties. Police are not identifying the boy because of his age. They say he broke into the Arnett Fast Mart on Arnett Boulevard just before 5:30.
Officials say the boy ran when they arrived, but was caught immediately.

Union workers on strike for six months at DanChem Technologies have been locked out by the company. That's according to members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 400.
They say the lockout took effect June 28th and the 55 workers still on strike may NOT rejoin the Danville company until the negotiations are resolved.
The company had no comment about the lockout, but the workers say they offered to return to work under their old contract and work until a new agreement is reached.

State legislators are heading back to Richmond next week. Governor Mark Warner has officially called a special session to fix the legislative mistake that would have guaranteed Virginia workers Saturday or Sunday off for worship. Last week, a coalition of businesses and the state Chamber of Commerce obtained an emergency temporary injunction to keep the law from taking effect. At one point, Filipino officials said Angelo dela Cruz had been released -- but the militant group holding him says he's still captive. The Islamic Army of Iraq released a statement on Al-Jazeera television saying the Philippines has 24 hours to ensure its sincerity and until July 20th to withdraw its troops from Iraq. The statement did NOT elaborate on how the Phillipines could show its sincerity.

Earlier this year, Campbell was busted for drunk driving, and was sentenced to 10-days in jail. Jail officials said they were happy about the performance, and that it shows the singer's character and willingness to be a team player while he's serving his time behind bars.

Virginia has now officially lifted its ban on fresh-cut Christmas trees in churches and apartments.

This week, the Virginia Board of Housing and Community Development overturned the fire regulations that banned the trees. Earlier this year, legislators ordered the state agency to take action, after the ban confused many Virginians. The fire rules went into effect in October, barring fresh-cut Christmas trees in multi-unit buildings without sprinkler systems. The ban also had covered trees in public places without sprinklers, including churches, hotels and restaurants.
