In a little over a week, the Roanoke Valley will come alive with the sounds of bluegrass and traditional string music.

But as Justin McLeod discovered this year there's has been a lot of fine tuning. So Justin, why the changes?

So this year there are several changes including a shorter festival, fewer locations, and lower prices.

There's a lot of noise these days on the Hollins University campus as organizers get ready for this year's Fiddlefest.

That's pretty good when you consider last year Fiddlefest failed to strike a chord with music fans.
In its first year, the week long music festival attracted fewer than ten thousand people.
Many complained ticket prices were too high and events were held in too many different locations.
As a result, Fiddlest lost more than 50-thousand dollars.

Fiddlefest is now entirely held on the campus of Hollins University.
The festival has also been consolidated from six days to three.

Dance Theatre of Lynchburg has used it rent-free for more than three years, while sinking its own money into restorations.
But the Theatre let its option to purchase the property expire, and director Keith Lee came before council asking they cut the price in half.
The request sparked a heated exchange between Lee and council member Joe Seiffert who opposes giving city money to any non-profit organization.

Council voted to extend the option for another year, giving the Dance Theatre time to come up with the 40-thousand to buy the building.

Crews will continue inspecting a bridge on Interstate 581 tomorrow morning, after small pieces of concrete fell onto Williamson Road this afternoon.

Engineers from the Virginia Department of Transportation were planning to inspect the bridge this afternoon, while crews worked to remove any other loose pieces of concrete.
No one was injured by falling debris, but the incident blocked two lanes of traffic on Williamson Road.
Crews will resume their work under the bridge at 9:30 tomorrow morning.

Insurgents threatened to kill a Filipino hostage today if the Philippine government did not comply. The Philippines tiny peacekeeping force was scheduled to leave the country on August 20th, but the pullout is already underway. Meanwhile, it appears another foreign worker HAS been executed in Iraq. An Iraqi militant group says it has executed one of the Bulgarian hostages its been holding. The group released a videotape to Arabic television, setting a 24-hour deadline to kill the other Bulgarian.

A Dublin man drowned in the New River this morning.

Rescuers say 56 year old Roger Wayne Hinkley was fishing in Pulaski County with his young son when he apparently lost his balance, fell in the water and couldn't get out. Bystanders tried but were unable to rescue Hinkley. Rescuers found his body after two hours of searching. This is the second person in less than a week to drown in the New River.

((Sixty one golfers came out to participate in the first round of the Women's City-County, including last year's champion Meg Davies. The rising JMU senior started off strong, posting a 77 to put her only two off the lead. Davies played in the same group with twelve-time winner Dot Bolling.

But it was Bolling's day to lead, firing a three-over 75. She shares the top spot with Countryside's Sara Cole. Bolling managed to shoot par 36 on the front nine despite having to use her husband's clubs. After flying home from Ireland yesterday, Bolling is not only fighting jet lag, she is waiting on her own clubs to make it home. But she still enjoyed playing with her younger competitor, Davies.
Cathi Carter came in at one off the lead with a 76, and Countryside's Marilyn Bussey rounded out the top four with a 79.))

Lance Armstrong will get his chance to be a mountain man starting tomorrow with the first of several climbs through the Alps and Pyrenees. Today though, he was content to ride in the middle of the pack.

Australian Robbie McEwen won a sprint to the finish, claiming his second stage of the Tour.
The 32 year old passed about a dozen riders down the stretch, and then threw his bike ahead of Norway's Thor Hushovd for the victory in a photo finish.

And finally, from college football's ever growing court docket. Miami cornerback Antrel Rolle has been suspended indefinitely after being charged with battery on a police officer. According to a police complaint, Rolle was involved in a fight near campus early Sunday and resisted arrest. He's free on bond and is scheduled for a court appearance on August 2nd. Rolle was expected to be one of the Hurricanes top players after deciding to return for his senior season.

Dave Wood has been top dog at the Roanoke attraction for more than four years. But next month he'll leave the Star City to take over the curator position at Virginia Safari Park in Natural Bridge.
