Authorities have now determined the cause of a house fire yesterday in Franklin County.

Officials say a propane leak led to the explosion and fire at the home on Pine Haven Lane, near Smith Mountain Lake. The home is a total loss with damage estimated at about 125-thousand dollars.
The house was unoccupied, and no one was hurt. Officials say the owner lives in Florida.

The Alleghany Sheriff's Office has arrested two people for vandalizing Alleghany High School and two other places.

Officials say one adult and several juveniles were involved in the vandalism incidents. The adult was identified as Ian M. Brown of Selma. Brown faces three charges of destruction of property and burglary. A seventeen-year-old suspect has also been arrested. Officials say several items were apparently thrown in a nearby river, but the Brackman Cup trophy has not been found

A woman who was injured in a minor hit-and-run accident was killed on the way to the hospital.
Authorities say a medical helicopter that had just picked up the injured woman crashed this morning in South Carolina, about 50 miles from Columbia.
She died, along with a paramedic, a flight nurse and the pilot.
No word yet on what caused the crash

Most were there to make sure some additional money went to the school system.

Many feared the Supervisors would NOT use all the money for education, and last night they turned out in large numbers to voice their frustration.

While the fate of a Filipino hostage in Iraq is still uncertain, violent protests broke out today in Manila.
Nearly 200 demonstrators are demanding the Philipines remove its troops from Iraq-- just as the hostage's captors have ordered.
A deadline has apparently passed for the Philippines to respond to the kidnappers' demands.
The Filipino government HAS indicated it would withdraw its forces from Iraq -- but it's not clear exactly when.

Scientists at the Mayo Clinic think they may have found the gene blamed for aging.
They're looking at a protein called Bub-R1 in mice.

When a gene mutation causes a shortage of the protein, mice age faster than normal.
Researchers think that controlling the age gene could perhaps spare women the ravages of osteoporosis and brittle bones-- among other side effects of aging.
The findings are in the July issue of the journal Nature Genetics.

Two wildfires are making it an even hotter summer in Southern California. Authorities say around seven- thousand acres of brush and forest land have burned so far.

A fire burning in the Angeles National Forest has blackened more than two thousand acres, prompting the evacuation of a dozen homes.
Officials say the blaze is about 20- percent contained.

Emergency crews were forced into action Sunday night, when an un- identified woman threatened to jump over the New York side of the falls.
After more than an hour of trying, firefighter Gary Carella managed to grab her arm.

Florida authorities are hoping to catch a tiger by the tail-- or any other way they can.

For a second day, a 600- pound tiger is on the loose in Florida, where it escaped from its owner's compound.
The tiger was reported missing yesterday afternoon from the home of actor Steve Sipek, who played Tarzan under the screen name Steve Hawkes in movies made in the late 19- 60s's.
Authorities have set up a perimeter around a search area.
They're hoping the tiger will get hungry and go back home for food.
Neighbors say this isn't the first time the big cat has gotten loose.

Marcus Vick's court date in New Kent on the reckless driving and marijuana possession charges he picked up over the Fourth of July weekend has been set for Tuesday, September 21st. Vick will be represented at the trial by Tidewater attorney Larry Woodward.

Barry Bonds was the first at the plate, and while he did not disappoint with 8 homers in the first round - the favorite to win it all was knocked out in round two. That was more than could be said for former champ Sammy Sosa. Sammy never really got into one of his grooves and he didn't get out of round one. Neither did the current homerun leader this season - the Phils' Jim Thome (TOME- ee) also exited in round one. Hometown favorite Lance Berkman got hot, and made it all the way to the finals. But no one could handle Miguel Tejada of the Orioles. He hits an all-time record of 15 in the second round, and 27 for the entire derby as he wins this year's event over the Astros' Berkman.
