Northwest Roanoke has been hit hardest. Verizon officials won't specify exactly how many people are affected, but say it could reach the thousands. Crews will continue to work through the night to splice in new cables in place of the burned ones. Service will not be fully restored for a few days. Until then, the City of Roanoke is making temporary 9-1-1 cellphones available to the elderly and special medical needs citizens in the affected areas.

A judge ruled that these dogs were being treated cruelly by Timothy Crigger. The dogs were seized by the game warden two weeks ago after police discovered them eating the dead body of Crigger's 65 year old mother, Esther. During today's hearing, the Commonwealth showed pictures of starving dogs and played a video tape of the inside of the home, where feces could be seen on the floor, on top of a wood stove and on the kitchen counters. The judge ordered the state to keep custody of the dogs and either find them homes or euthanize them. He also ordered Crigger pay for their care and never OWN another pet.

Crigger still has to go on trial for the animal cruelty charge against him. 79 year old Elmer Crigger and his two other sons, Daniel and Donald are also charged in the case.
