The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends women breast feed exclusively for the first six months than continue for another six months after adding solids.
Breast milk has been shown to protect against illnesses such as allergies and ear infections, reduce the risk of childhood diabetes, increase bone density, and improve brain and nervous system function.
For moms it can protect against osteoporosis, reduce the risk for breast and ovarian cancer, and help with weight loss after the baby.
Christy says it's important that women have support during the process and that's why she turned to a lactation consultant.

The lack of practicing nurse-midwives comes at time when the need for maternity care is growing, especially in rural parts of the state.
