The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends women breast feed exclusively for the first six months than continue for another six months after adding solids.
Breast milk has been shown to protect against illnesses such as allergies and ear infections, reduce the risk of childhood diabetes, increase bone density, and improve brain and nervous system function.
For moms it can protect against osteoporosis, reduce the risk for breast and ovarian cancer, and help with weight loss after the baby.
Christy says it's important that women have support during the process and that's why she turned to a lactation consultant.

Phyllis Turk says she is one of a few certified nurse mid-wives that are actually practicing in the Virginia because of all the restrictions in the state. She says one major barrier is the requirement that nurse mid-wives be under the supervision of a doctor.

[RUNS= 13]
[OUT Q=and that's pretty intimidating]

The lack of practicing nurse-midwives comes at time when the need for maternity care is growing, especially in rural parts of the state. And finally in health news, If you have flat feet don't worry you're not alone. It's a fairly common condition, but it can be serious if it's causing you pain.
(///// SOT /////)

[RUNS= 16]

And it's not just arthritis -- it can also lead to hammer toes or bunions as in the case of this patient.
