Vacationers still spent time on the beaches, even as local power companies say about 10-thousand customers went without power. Everything on Hatteras Island from Rodanthe to Hatteras Village was in the dark.
The National Weather Service reported an 83 mile-per-hour wind gust on Ocracoke around midday and a 72 mile-per-hour gust at Buxton, near Cape Hatteras.

Charges against a Danville man accused of killing his girlfriend have now been certified to a grand jury.

Stanley Tate is charged with murdering Charmane Davis, who was found dead inside his Franklin County home in May.

Investigators believe Davis caught Tate with another woman.
Today, during a preliminary hearing, the "other woman," LaChrisa (Luh-Chris-suh) Robertson, testified that Tate shot Davis because he thought she was an intruder.
Tate's family says the entire situation has been difficult for both sides.

State Police reconstructed the wreck and now say it was Paul Morra's vehicle that crossed the center line and struck Roy Ninninger's vehicle. Ninninger, a 52-year old Moneta resident, was killed. Morra survived the accident.
Morra, an 18-year old from Salem, was headed toward the Westlake area, not going the opposite direction as was first reported.

Hikers discovered his body around 7-o-clock last night.

Virginia Tech is still waiting for a rare flower with a strong aroma to start blooming -- and stinking.

The A-titanum (ty-TAN-um) flower produces a rotten, fish-like smell.
The one at Tech is expected to bloom sometime this week.
The flower, nicknamed the corpse plant, uses its strong scent to attract pollinators from 50 feet away.
The one-of-a-kind plant was scheduled to bloom tomorrow at Virginia Tech's horticulture greenhouse, but it may take a few extra days.
The Tech greenhouse is open for visitors through Friday from eight until four.
