That's according to the Death Penalty Information Center- which puts the number at 13-hundred-69 executions. According to the Virginia Department of Corrections, most executions were hangings that took place at courthouses around the state until 1908. That year, capital punishment was centralized and executions were performed by electric chair in Richmond. Since 1995, inmates have had the choice between electrocution and lethal injection.
