Samples have been sent to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control to confirm that the disease is actually West Nile Virus.

last year there were 26 human cases of west nile virus and one death reported in Virginia.
Health officials say that most people who are bitten by an infected mosquito do not get sick, and most who do get sick suffer a mild flu like illness.
But epidemiologist Cindy Chaos says the new case reinforces the need for people in the Roanoke Valley to reduce their exposure to mosquitos, and take steps to control the mosquito population.

It was August 11th of last year, when local health officials announced their first case of the year... and we ended up with a couple of cases in our area.

The victim of a shooting in Wythe County is now in trouble with the law. Police have charged 26-year-old Justin V-Nester with felony assault of a family member.

Police say Nester got into a physical fight with his girlfriend, 39-year-old Shelby Annette Adams, around 7 o'clock last night at their home on Foster Falls Road. Police say after the fight, Adams went to another room, grabbed a rifle, and shot Nester once in the chest. Nester is in serious condition at Bristol Regional Hospital. Adams was treated for her injuries, and is now being held at the NRV jail on 25-thousand dollar bond.

Charges against a Lynchburg man have been upgraded to murder, now that the victim from a fight last week has died.

18-year-old Quincy Rashad Gray has been charged with the death of 23-year-old Michael Steven Rose of Gladstone.
Police say the two men were invovled in an altercation on August First.. Rose died Saturday from head injuries he received in that fight.
