((Alien Vs. Predator (Twentieth Century Fox)
Review by: Joel Sink
If you're a fan of the original two Alien films (three and four were crap) or the first Predator film (the second one was crap) go to see something else. If you've never seen any of the films from these two series you might enjoy this one, but only if your expectations are pretty low.
Lance Henriksen (Bishop from "Aliens") is Charles Weyland a wealthy entrepreneur. A satellite that his company owns spots a pyramid buried under the ice of Antarctica. He assembles a team of experts to explore and document the mysterious pyramid. Sanaa Lathan as Alexa Woods is the gutsy mountain climber who leads the team across the ice to the entrance to the pyramid. Raoul Bova is Sebastian de Rosa the linguistic expert who translates the hieroglyphics on the walls of the pyramid. When they arrive at the pyramid they discover that someone has already dug a tunnel down through the ice to the pyramids entrance. (There should have been a flashing neon sign over the entrance to the tunnel that reads "DANGER!") Once inside the pyramid they realize that they are not alone, they are in a tug of war between the "Predator" aliens and the "Alien" aliens. Choose your team and cheer for 'em.
"Alien" and "Aliens" are two of the best science fictions films ever made. Each of them has a unique feel, but each was an amazing film in it's own right. This film isn't anywhere close. They started loosing me when they ran across an abandoned whaling village in Antarctica dating from 1904. Um, wouldn't it be under about 30 feet of snow and ice after 100 years? When they get to the tunnel that has already been dug through the ice they don't really seem too concerned about it. "Who could have dug the tunnel?" "I don't know, lets just go down it." You have to just go blindly into this one
(I'm talking about the movie).
The acting's not bad, but not great either. The script was lame, Lame, LAME! The effects were pretty good, but without them there wouldn't be much to see here at all. We have, yet again, a movie where the star is the special effects. Special effects just aren't enough to carry a movie.
