Ryan Howard always wanted to join the military, so much so he enlisted early.

While the family waits for answers, they remember a young man who knew long ago he wanted to give his life to the military.

When the Howards look at pictures of their son, they see a man who enjoyed hunting, loved his family, and clearly wanted to serve his country.

His family had nothing to worry about until he went to Iraq.
He came home safely but had to return in June.

Not until last Thursday morning when two Marines came to their home.
Ryan's father Greg answered the door.

What happened was Ryan's helicopter, similar to the one you see here, crashed during a Marine Logistics flight on the night of August 11th.
The military told the family the helicopter apparently had engine problems.

At first Ryan was listed as missing. It would be three more days before the military confirmed he was dead.

But with that heartache comes a lot of joy.
The 26 year old who graduated from Alleghany High School planned on making a career out of the military.
His family says he was proud of his service in Iraq.

It's taken three months, but the Air Force is back in Franklin County to clean up its mess.

In May, an F-15 fighter jet crashed near Julie Paulitzsky's home. While officials picked up most of the debris, there were still gallons of jet fuel that had seeped into the ground. Paulitzky says Air Force officials told her they would be back to clean up the fuel, but didn't return. She finally called in reinforcements.

Authorities in Franklin County are working to determine the cause of an explosion that killed an Augusta County woman and injured her ex-husband.

Today, investigators were examining the burned out remains of a Ford Explorer that burst into flames Sunday night.

They say 30- year- old Shanda Hanger drove to the Crazy Horse Marina campground, and called her ex-husband to the S-U-V before it exploded.
Investigators say they are trying to determine whether the fire resulted from some sort of malfunction, or was an intentional act.

Just three days after the hurricane hit - the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hosted the Bengals in their preseason game that was originally set for this past Saturday. Former Friday Football Extra stars dominated this thing. In the first quarter - Ronde Barber with a juggling interception off of Carson Palmer as he catches it after hitting his bottom to set up the first score of the night. Later in the first half - the Bucs' defense does it again - this time former Bassett star Devone Claybrooks recovers the Bruce Perry fumble to set up another Bucs' score. Claybrooks played at east Carolina. And on the Bengals' side - Shayne Graham was perfect in for the game. He nailed this 36 yard field in the first quarter and later came back in the second to split the uprights with a 32 yard kick.

To some, he's just a figure from the Bible... but a cave in Israel is shedding new light on John the Baptist.

Archaeologists have spent five years digging at a site near Jerusalem where they believe John the Baptist anointed many of his disciples.
The cave contains a huge cistern with 28 steps leading to an underground pool of water.
There are also ancient wall carvings that experts say tell the story of the fiery New Testament preacher, as well as a stone they believe was used for ceremonial foot washing.
