((
It's an official day of mourning in Russia -- and at the kremlin and elsewhere, russians are remembering the 89 people who died in two plane crashes on tuesday. As workers picked through the debris of the two jets, the search for answers was going slowly. It is still not clear what caused two Russian jets travelling from Moscow to southern Russia to crash to earth at almost exactly the same moment. Although rescue workers recovered the flight data recorders from both planes, officials said today they were damaged and may take some time to decode. Only information from those so-called black boxes, is likely to reveal whether it was terrorism, or some kind of mechanical failure, that caused the crashes.
This is the airport from which both the doomed planes left. and officials took us to the basement, to show us how every bag getting on every flight is screened. this is most modern security system in russia, and officials say it would have been impossible for anyone to have gotten explosives or a gun through it.
But as Tuesday's crashes prove, what seems impossible is sometimes possible.
Russia's transport minister, who's heading the investigation, confirmed that one of the planes issued a distress signal just before it went down. Aviation experts say this kind of signal is most often used during a hijacking situation - though government officials have not confirmed that this was going on. Officials are working hard at convincing Russians it is still safe to fly....and they are ......by the thousands. But until a cause if found for the disaster, many are travelling with an uncomfortable sense of fear. BK, CBS News, Moscow.))
