Firefighters were back at Dan River Mills this morning after yesterday's fire apparently rekindled. Officials say a small section of the roof smoldered overnight and sparked up again around 9 o'clock this morning. This morning's fire only caused minor damage. Dan River officials say last night's fire at the finishing plant will NOT affect production schedules. The company's Human Resources Director tells us there is no significant structural damage at the Schoolfield facility and no evident damage to plant equipment.

This building in the 700 block of Downey Street caught fire early Friday morning. Several people had to be rescued and the entire building has since been condemned. Most of the residents have found a new place to live, but Red Cross workers say they really need more money to help the people with vouchers for food and clothing.

Rocky Mount officials say they'll need to go with PLAN-B -- to improve one area of town.
(------------)
[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=03-Rocky Mount/File Tape;]

The town had hoped to make the same type of improvements to uptown Rocky Mount, as it did a few years ago downtown. Those included removing overhead power lines, and adding new benches, crosswalks and lamp posts. But, officials say the applications for two grants that would provide funding for the project were both denied. Officials say they are still optimistic -- and plan to adjust the applications for re-submission later this year.
