Yesterday, mourners came to Forest Hills Presbyterian Church to celebrate and give thanks for Howard Stone's life.
The 19-year-old college sophomore was a boy scout, an athlete, a classmate remembered for his positive influence on others.

Fire investigators say the fire started in a bedroom in the basement of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity house.
So far they've found no indication foul play, but it will be a few weeks before the exact cause is known.

Victims of a fire in Radford are competing with Hurricane Charley for Red Cross aid.
The agency is trying to help 30 people left homeless after last week's major apartment fire.

This building in the 700 block of Downey Street caught fire early Friday morning.
Several people had to be rescued and the entire building has since been condemned.
Most of the residents have found a new place to live, but Red Cross workers say they really need more money to help the people with vouchers for food and clothing.

They're re- routing southbound traffic on Route 220.

The family of a Roanoke County middle school student who died earlier this year is working to keep his memory alive while helping others.

Adam Wickham was an eighth grader at William Byrd Middle school, when he died of a heart arrhythmia (uh-ryth-mee-uh) this Spring.
Yesterday, Wickham's family and friends held a silent auction and dinner to help raise money toward a scholarship in his name.
The 10-thousand dollar reward will be handed out each year to a senior at William Byrd High School.

State police say traffic is congested, and moving slowly on both lanes of 220 in the area.

Rocky Mount officials say improvements to one area of town are on hold while they try to get money for the project.

The town had hoped to make the same type of improvements to uptown Rocky Mount, as it did a few years ago downtown.
Those included removing overhead power lines, and adding new benches, crosswalks and lamp posts.
But, officials say the applications for two grants that would provide funding for the project were both denied.
Officials say they are still optimistic -- and plan to adjust the applications for re-submission later this year.

Firefighters were back at Dan River Mills yesterday after Saturday's fire apparently rekindled.
Officials say a small section of the roof smoldered overnight and sparked up again around 9 o'clock in the morning.
It caused only minor damage.
Dan River officials say neither fire at the finishing plant will affect production schedules.
The company's Human Resources Director says there is no significant structural damage at the Schoolfield facility, and
no evident damage to plant equipment.
