The town had hoped to make the same type of improvements to uptown Rocky Mount, as it did a few years ago downtown. Those included removing overhead power lines, and adding new benches, crosswalks and lamp posts. But, officials say the applications for two grants that would provide funding for the project were both denied. Officials say they are still optimistic -- and plan to adjust the applications for re-submission later this year.

Firefighters were back at Dan River Mills yesterday after Saturday's fire apparently rekindled. Officials say a small section of the roof smoldered overnight and sparked up again around 9 o'clock in the morning. It caused only minor damage. Dan River officials say neither fire at the finishing plant will affect production schedules. The company's Human Resources Director says there is no significant structural damage at the Schoolfield facility, and no evident damage to plant equipment.
