"we think that radiation may not be necessary for older patients who have breast cancer of an early stage." :06

(STANDUP: Dr. Mallika Marshall/CBS NEWS/Boston, MA)

THAT'S BECAUSE A NEW STUDY IN THE NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF MEDICINE SAYS THAT FOR WOMEN OVER 70 LIKE EVELYN... RADIATION DID NOT HAVE MUCH OF A POSITIVE EFFECT . THE RESEARCH FOUND IT DID NOT IMPROVE SURVIVAL RATES AND ONLY SLIGHTLY DECREASED THE RISK OF THE TUMOR COMING BACK.

(SOT-Dr. Kevin Hughes/Mass General Hospital)

"I think we can significantly decrease the number of women we recommend radiation for. So I think it will have a major impact on our patient population, this is a third of all breast cancer occurs in women over 70." :10
DOCTOR KEVIN HUGHES, WHO WAS PART OF THE RESEARCH TEAM, SAYS THE FINDING COULD HELP SOME 40-THOUSAND WOMAN OVER 70 AVOID RADIATION AND ITS SIDE EFFECTS EVERY YEAR. BUT HE NOTES, FOR YOUNGER WOMEN IT IS STILL A USEFUL TOOL. THE STUDY ALSO FOUND THAT IN WOMEN 'UNDER' 70 RADIATION IS VERY EFFECTIVE IN KEEPING BREAST CANCER FROM RETURNING.
