58 year old James Reid was executed tonight just after nine o-clock.
Last minute appeals to the U-S Supreme Court and Governor Mark Warner did not halt the execution. [***NEWS 7 @ 11 IN MONITOR***]

Justin how did Reid's lawyers try to stop tonight's execution?
Jean they argued Virginia's method of execution is unconstitutional.

They believe it constitutes cruel and unusual punishment because Reid could have felt pain before he died.
The Supreme Court already dismissed that argument once before. The justices did the same with this afternoon's appeal.
That left Governor Mark Warner who refused to intervene on Reid's behalf.

Back in 1997, Reid was convicted of the murder of 87 year old Annie Lester.
Her family did not attend tonight's execution.

Tonight's execution may have proven the lawyer's point. That's because medical technicians had a difficult time placing I-V's in Reid.
His execution is the fifth in Virginia this year.

Crews were called to the building on Salem Avenue around seven tonight. Originally firefighters thought two people may be trapped inside- but later found out that everyone got out safely.
There was still one rescue tonight- firefighters found a little dog trapped inside. The dog and everyone else living at the apartment were fine, but the house had major damage.

Flags are flying at half staff around campus for Army Lieutenant Tim Price. The 25 year old from Midlothian, Virginia was killed by hostile fire in Baghdad on Tuesday. The Corp of Cadets has placed a wreath in his honor at the war memorial. Price will be the 419th named engraved on the Memorial. He will be remembered at a formal flag lowering ceremony, Friday at 4:45 at the flag pole on the quad.

Hurricane Ivan is now a category 5 storm- It's already left a trail of destruction through Grenada and Barbados, killing 23 people in the Caribbean.

Today two major artifacts were removed from the civil war ironclad U-S-S Monitor.
The ship's pair of 11-inch Dahlgren cannons were removed from the revolving gun turret.
The guns weigh 17-thousand pounds each.
The ship was discovered two years ago off the coast of North Carolina.
Its innovative turret is being preserved at the Mariner's Museum in Newport News. (------------)
