It came ashore in the early morning hours near Gulf Shores Alabama.
The storm pounded the coast with 130 mile an hour winds and a 16 foot storm surge, something even long-time Gulf residents say they've never seen.

So far, there have been 12 storm-related deaths in the United States, many of them due to tornadoes in Florida.
A million and a half homes and businesses in the Gulf Coast states are now without power.

A fire in Salem killed a woman early this morning.

The fire started at this home on Sears Road shortly after 2 o'clock this morning.
When firefighters entered the home, they found the body of 51 year old Cherie (shir-EE) Leary near the back door.
She is the wife of a Salem Police sergeant.
A preliminary investigation showed that the fire started in the living room, and was contained in that area.
The cause is still under investigation by local and state officials.
