The worst of Ivan's terrible winds appear to be over. Tornado watches and high wind advisories have now expired though more heavy rain could still soak Central and Southwest Virginia.
The worst of today's damage is in the Henry County community of Fieldale where a suspected tornado touched down just after noon.

Residents across Bedford County are now realizing the damage left behind by Ivan. Here at Goodview Elementary School debris litters the grounds. School officials first thought part of the school had blown off but now believe the twisted metal blew over from a nearby farm or home that wasn't so lucky. ((NATS OF CHAIN SAWS.)) Here in the Stewartsville section of the county off Route 619 dozens of trees were capped half way up their trunks. Fences and cars fell victim to their dismantling. Some residents report hearing a loud noise accompanied by high winds this afternoon.

In the New River Valley, several creeks spilled over their banks. A few businesses were hit by high water and resorted to using sandbags to stay open for the day. In Galax, this culvert collapsed from the flooding.
Despite the damage, one business owner said the storm wasn't as bad as Frances was last week.

About 4-thousand American Electric Power Customers are still without power in Grayson and Carroll counties and the city of Galax. 14-hundred are without power in Bland and Wythe Counties. AEP hopes to get everyone back on line sometime this evening.

A traffic accident shut down northbound lanes of Interstate 81 near the Ironto interchange at the height of the storm.
State police say it started when a car hydroplaned just before noon.
The wreck involved seven vehicles including a tractor trailer.
Six people were taken to area hospitals. There's no word on their conditions. I-81 has been reopened.

Federal prosecutors hope a new jury in a new town will help them get a conviction against the former director of the D-Day Memorial, Richard Burrow.
Burrow's first trial on fraud charges ended in a hung jury two years ago ... his new trial got underway today in Charlottesville's federal court.
