Southside residents may get a shock in their electric bills next summer.
(-------------)
[VO-NAT]

The city of Danville just entered a new contract to buy wholesale electricity from A-E-P and the result will be a big increase for consumers.
Danville officials expect a 40 percent increase for residential customers, a 50 percent hike for commercial accounts and a 60 percent increase for the industries that are city's largest power consumers.
That means a 60 dollar residential bill will jump to 84 bucks.
The increases will show up in city bills next August.
The agency that negotiated Danville's new contract also facilitated new contracts for Martinsville, Bedford, Salem, Radford and the Botetourt-Craig Co-Op, but it's not clear if rates in those communities will rise as well.
