Customers from Radford to Danville will be feeling the heat from their electric bills next summer.

Danville, Martinsville, Bedford, Radford, Salem and the Botetourt-Craig Cooperative all have contracts with Cinergy that expire next year. Most of those localities have already signed deals with American Electric Power that will increase rates. The City of Salem is still negotiating with Cinergy. Under the agreement, officials expect a 40- percent increase for residential customers, a 50- percent hike for commercial customers and up to a 60-percent increase for the cities largest customers. Officials cite rising fuel costs and the federal deregulation of the electricity business for the drastic jump in prices.
