Meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Blacksburg say this year's Hurricane season definitely falls in the category of UNUSUAL. And they aren't the only ones so interested in all the recent storm activity. New River Valley Bureau Chief Rachel DePompa explains.

And this year in particular the region's seen some heavy winds... enough to spawn at least three tornadoes. Damage in Henry County alone is in the millions. Costs like that are something Virginia Tech professor Muhammad Hajj is hoping to one day prevent. He's in the middle of a study with three other universities on how storm winds effect structures.

A 19-year old Roanoke man is recovering from what police say was a drive-by shooting.

Investigators say Corey Bumbry was standing along Gandy Drive near Washington Park around 1:30 yesterday afternoon, when a maroon car pulled up. One of the occupants fired several shots, hitting Bumbry. The car then left. Bumbry was taken to RMH where his condition is listed as stable.
Police say Bumbry did not know his attacker.

The vandalism was discovered by the student organization early Sunday morning and was cleaned up before police arrived. The University has issued a statement saying it does not condone this behavior. Anyone who saw anything suspicious at Squires over the weekend is asked to call Tech Police.

At a news conference in the old courtroom today, Congressman Virgil Goode announced the receipt of two federal grants totalling 290-thousand dollars. The first check will be spent on repairs to the roof and interior. The Historical Society says its ultimate goal is to renovate the entire 1823 structure into a musem and build an annex. The entire project is expected to cost about 2-million dollars. (------------)
