Every fall, the floodgates are open and the public gets to see what the smartroad is all about.

It's been open just four years but in that time scientists have conducted more than 7-thousand hours of research that has led to 56 major projects.

They're even tracking people's driving habits.
They're doing it by collecting data through a device built into test vehicles.
It gauges things like speed and even takes pictures.

Scientists are also beginning to do tests on Virginia's tallest bridge which is part of the smartroad.
Future projects may involve homeland security.

But the smartroad does have its critics, some think this is a total waste of money.
Those who see it firsthand disagree.

The SmartRoad will eventually be open to motorists when it's connected to Interstate 81.

Scientists may be gone for the night, but their equipment continues to watch over Mt. St. Helens.

They say a steam explosion is expected tonight- but an eruption is unlikely. Scientists say magma may be pushing against the underside of the crusted dome which is acting as a plug. This is creating major friction and the question now is will it be enough force to push all the way through? Geologists have issued a volcano advisory and seismic activity has increased. Three to four earthquakes per minute were recorded today- each measuring two or more on the Richter scale.

Residents along the James River in Buchanan are just beginning to clean up tonight.

Earlier today the James crested at 25 point 6 feet- about 8 feet above flood stage.
Nearly a half dozen businesses along Lowe street sustained major water damage including two restaurants and a church.
Although the river got just feet from their doorsteps, no homes were evacuated due to the rising water.
The James River is expected to fall below flood stage after midnight.

Dozens of animals need new homes after their owner was killed in flooding in Patrick County yesterday.

Friends of 51 -year old Kathy Smith are cleaning up after Smith was killed by a raging Sandy Creek. Officials estimate the now serene stream had risen at least ten feet. Smith's mobile home and outbuilding, which she used to protect rescued cats and dogs from other wildlife, were knocked off their foundations and sent downstream. Smiths' body was found in the outbuilding. Friends are now trying to find new homes for the surviving animals.

A year ago, Bush had an eighteen point lead.
But when it comes to the president's job performance, a majority rates his job performance as excellent or good.
A majority of voters also say the economy is the most important issue this election, and 46-percent believe the president would handle the economy better.

Nazi propagandist Axis Sally did time there after World War Two, as did Singer Billie Holliday.
More recently, the woman who tried to kill President Ford was held there.
Lynette, Squeaky, Fromme actually escaped from the prison for a few days in 1987.
Martha Stewart must report to prison by October 8th.
A source says Alderson was picked because of its remote location-- amid fears the prisons Stewart wanted were too media-accessible.

The government finished presenting its case against the former D-Day Memorial director today.

Burrow is charged with defrauding banks and the state of Virginia as he raced to raise money to build the D-Day Memorial before its dedication in 2001.
Today, F-B-I agent Richard Ress told the jury it was clear Burrow was spending money designated for an education center on the monument itself, against donors' wishes.
The trial is now expected to last into next week.

The man who led WDBJ Television for more than 20 years, was remembered today for his personal integrity, professional leadership, and gentle nature.
John Harkrader died Sunday at the age of 88, and today family and friends gathered to celebrate his life.

VMI is looking to make some serious improvements to its football stadium, and now they have the finances necessary to give Alumni Field its facelift.

Today, VMI graduate P. Wesley Foster, the Chairman and Chief Executive officer of the Long and Foster real estate Companies, pledged $8 million dollars for renovations and improvements to the facility. The hope is to expand the team facilities at Clarkson-McKenna Hall, refurbish the grandstand seating, renovate the concession areas, and improve the restrooms and practice field. Work will begin in early 2005 and be completed by the fall of 2006.
