It's been open just four years but in that time scientists have conducted more than 7-thousand hours of research that has led to 56 major projects.

They're even tracking people's driving habits.
They're doing it by collecting data through a device built into test vehicles.
It gauges things like speed and even takes pictures.

Scientists may be gone for the night, but their equipment continues to watch over Mt. St. Helens.

They say a steam explosion is expected tonight- but an eruption is unlikely. Scientists say magma may be pushing against the underside of the crusted dome which is acting as a plug. This is creating major friction and the question now is will it be enough force to push all the way through? Geologists have issued a volcano advisory and seismic activity has increased. Three to four earthquakes per minute were recorded today- each measuring two or more on the Richter scale.

Residents along the James River in Buchanan are just beginning to clean up tonight.

Earlier today the James crested at 25 point 6 feet- about 8 feet above flood stage.
Nearly a half dozen businesses along Lowe street sustained major water damage including two restaurants and a church.
Although the river got just feet from their doorsteps, no homes were evacuated due to the rising water.
The James River is expected to fall below flood stage after midnight.

Dozens of animals need new homes after their owner was killed in flooding in Patrick County yesterday.

Friends of 51 -year old Kathy Smith are cleaning up after Smith was killed by a raging Sandy Creek. Officials estimate the now serene stream had risen at least ten feet. Smith's mobile home and outbuilding, which she used to protect rescued cats and dogs from other wildlife, were knocked off their foundations and sent downstream. Smiths' body was found in the outbuilding. Friends are now trying to find new homes for the surviving animals.

VMI is looking to make some serious improvements to its football stadium, and now they have the finances necessary to give Alumni Field its facelift.

Today, VMI graduate P. Wesley Foster, the Chairman and Chief Executive officer of the Long and Foster real estate Companies, pledged $8 million dollars for renovations and improvements to the facility. The hope is to expand the team facilities at Clarkson-McKenna Hall, refurbish the grandstand seating, renovate the concession areas, and improve the restrooms and practice field. Work will begin in early 2005 and be completed by the fall of 2006.

In one other VMI note, Johnny Morgan, a member of the Class of 1955, will be inducted into the VMI Sports Hall of Fame tomorrow night. The Buena Vista native was a top notch guard for Coach John McKenna and he also played baseball in Lexington.
