((ALL THAT'S LEFT IS TO MOP UP POCKETS OF REBEL RESISTANCE - THAT'S THE VIEW OF U-S AND IRAQI COMMANDERS --THEY SAY THEIR TROOPS HAVE RETAKEN THE FLASHPOINT CITY OF SAMARRA, NORTH OF BAGHDAD, FROM SUNNI INSURGENTS. THE BIG QUESTION IS WHAT HAPPENS NEXT, AS AMERICAN TROOPS PULL BACK AND THE NEWLY FORMED IRAQI NATIONAL GUARD STEPS UP TO PROVIDE SECURITY. THE RED CRESCENT... THE ISLAMIC VERSION OF THE RED CROSS... IS RUSHING SUPPLIES TO SAMARRA AND HAS SET UP TENTS FOR THOSE WHOSE HOMES WERE DESTROYED.
EARLY TODAY IN ANOTHER CORNER OF THE SUNNI TRIANGLE, THE CITY OF FALLUJAH WAS ONCE AGAIN HIT WITH A "PRECISION" AIR STRIKE BY U-S WAR PLANES. IN THE MORNING RESIDENTS CLAIMED INNOCENT PEOPLE WERE KILLED. WITH NO U-S TROOPS ON THE GROUND THERE, THE REAL TRUTH IS UNCLEAR.
WHAT IS CLEAR IS THAT U-S TROOPS AND THE IRAQI NATIONAL GUARD ARE ON THE OFFENSIVE. THERE ARE DAILY CLASHES IN SADR CITY, THE BAGHDAD SLUM, AND U.S. MARINES MAY BE GEARING UP TO RETAKE FALLUJAH. BUT THE INSURGENTS ARE NOT GIVING UP... SETTING FIRE TO SEVERAL OIL TANKERS TRAVELING IN A U-S CONVOY OUTSIDE BAGHDAD.

Among Rather's defenders was a viewer from Forest (B.W. Grim): "For Dan Rather, I am grateful for all the hard work. I have seen him on for countless hours and in harm's way just to deliver us his best. He is the best. If he loses his job he will be missed. We all make mistakes, don't we? Another Roanoke viewer (Rhonda B. Gober) wrote: "I want to let you know that I have not stopped watching Channel 7 since the news of Dan Rather's blunder. I love watching Channel 7 and feel that Dan Rather is human and that it was a mistake."
And a viewer from Boones Mill (Gail Bradford) commented: "I would just like to state to all the viewers out there that seem to be upset by the supposed bias on CBS, have you watched any other channels?
