Hazel moved inland at high tide with an 18 foot storm surge at Calabash. The flooding killed 19 people in North Carolina and injured 200 more. 15,000 homes were destroyed and 39,000 damaged. At today's prices, the cost of Hazel would be nearly $10 billion. Incredibly wind gusts near 100 mph were recorded from central Virginia all the way to Canada where 85 people died in the flooding rain.
