It started in Christiansburg and topped 110 miles a hour.
More than six officers from three different agencies were in pursuit and it all ended 30 miles down the road on 581 in Roanoke. [***NEWS 7 @ 11 in MONITOR***]

Four women were observed allegedly stealing merchandise from Sears and that's when the cops were called in.
Christiansburg Police caught up with the suspects on the 460 bypass and it quickly turned into a high speed chase that continued on interstate 81.

The pursuit ended around 7:40 this evening on the exit ramp from 581 south to Peters Creek Road.
State Police deployed stop sticks which flattened two of the tires.
A trooper then attempted to force the vehicle onto the exit ramp but the driver side swiped the cruiser.
The suspect's car then ran off the road and all four women were taken into custody.
State Police point out it was Christiansburg's call but say the chase was justified.

The four women who are in the twenties face a number of charges.
The driver Shelia Williams is charged with felony attempt to elude, felony shoplifting, reckless driving and assault on a state police trooper.
Ruth Barrett, Shelitta Williams, and Shalinda Hairston are all face felony conspiracy to commit grand larceny.

Police tell us the women allegedly stole two thousand dollars worth of merchandise from Sears.

Governor Warner announced today that 94-percent of high school seniors in the class of 2004 graduated.
That was the first year students were required to pass the Standards of Learning tests to earn a diploma.
State officials are calling the passing rate a great achievement.

The figures also show that more than twenty six percent of students who were freshmen four years ago, dropped out, left the state, or failed to graduate with their class.

Today, president Bush approved disaster aid for the cities of Roanoke and Salem as well as Alleghany, Craig, Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, Patrick, and Roanoke counties.
Individuals will be eligible for housing assistance, low interest loans, and grants.
Those same communities were also approved for a Hazard Mitigation program which provides funds for government projects that help protect homes and businesses against future damage.

Car-owners will pay a little more for new tires to help get rid of old ones.
The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality today announced plans to get rid of the remaining 342 tire dumps around the state over the next 18 months.
The cleanup project will be financed by a three-year increase in the recycling fee consumers pay when they buy tires.
The effort to cleanup old tire dumps began in 1992. There were 23 million tires littered across the state then. It's down to just three million now.

The murder trial of a former minister from Pittsylvania County began today in North Carolina.

Rick Pulley is charged with killing his wife more than five years ago.
37-year-old Patty Jo Pulley disappeared in May of 1999 ... her body was found near a bridge in Caswell County, North Carolina more than three years later.
The 48-year-old Reverend Pulley was arrested two months later and charged with the killing.
Jury selection began today. His trial is expected to last at least a week.

This paraglider spent more than six hours on top of a spruce tree. Dr. Charlie Phillips was paragliding along the Oregon coast yesterday when a gust of wind carried him into Ecola State Park. He became tangled in the tree and was left dangling by his support wires 150 feet above the ground. The fire department, rescue teams and a coast guard helicopter were all called in to help but it was loggers who were finally able to free him. Using lights from the helicopter they climbed the tree and used pulleys and ropes to lower him. Phillips was not seriously injured in the ordeal.

Tech is off this week, but this afternoon the school announced that it has worked out a new two year agreement to play Syracuse. Tech goes to the Carrier Dome in 2010, and Orange comes to Blacksburg in 2011.

The first BCS standings of the season were released tonight. The Bowl Championship Series will ultimately determine the two teams that will battle in the national championship on January 4th in the Orange Bowl.

No surprise at the top of the first BCS poll, as number one ranked and defending National Champ Southern Cal holds down the number one position. However, the number two team in the BCS is a bit of a surprise. Miami and not Oklahoma is second in the standings.

Two thirds of the ranking is based on the polls, while the other third is based on six computer rankings - and that's where Miami made up all of its ground. Auburn and FSU round out the top five. As you can see the Cavaliers are 15th and the Hokies 25th.

It's a place for rehabilitation and second chances. Now a local prison is the training ground for some "homeless hounds."

In addition to its 352-inmates, the Botetourt Correctional Center is now playing host to a number of dogs and puppies.
It's all a part of the "Pen Pals" program which teams an inmate and a dog together for an eight to ten-week period.
