It's been debated for years but tonight city council gave VDOT a green light to start tearing down the Worsham Street Bridge in Danville.
However, the city left the door open for a compromise. [***Bridge Battle in Monitor***]

Shannon, it will probably be at least two years before the bridge can be demolished.

So city council says it is willing to revisit the issue if an historical group can raise the money to save it.
But to do that will require several million dollars.

As a result, the city closed the bridge in July.
Since then, city leaders have studied their options and found it would cost 17 million dollars to build a new one and more than five million dollars to repair it to accommodate some vehicles.

According to the mayor, the historical society plans to apply for grants.

Officials say even though it will NOT offer commercial airline service, it will help the economy by serving small engine and corporate planes.
