A power outage early this morning on the campus of Virginia Tech has left 19 buildings in the dark and canceled classes for thousands of students. Crews have been working since early this morning to restore the electricity.

State health officials hope to know this week how much of the flu vaccine ordered by public and private agencies may actually get here.
They say once the state receives more vaccine, it will eventually go to local health departments for those at high risk.
Meanwhile, the Secretary of Health and Human Services is urging senior citizens to stop standing in long lines for the flu shot.
But many of them aren't listening.

A small plane has crashed in downtown Atlanta.

Authorities say the accident happened near the Martin Luther King, Junior National Historic Site-- but they add the site was NOT damaged.
An F-A-A spokesman says there were two people on board the twin-engine plane when it crashed just before 11 A-M. Authorities confirm at least one person was killed.
The flight was en route from Atlanta to Venice, Florida.
Witnesses said the plane spun out of control and struck an abandoned building.

A high speed chase that crossed county lines at 110 miles an hour has landed four women in jail.
Christiansburg Police say it began after the suspects allegedly shoplifted merchandise from Sears at the New River Valley Mall.
Six officers from three different agencies pursued the women on Route 460, I-81 and 581.

The chase ended around 7:40 last night on the exit ramp from 581 south to Peters Creek Road.
State Police deployed stop sticks, which flattened two of the car's tires.
A trooper then attempted to force the vehicle onto the exit ramp, but the driver sideswiped the cruiser.
The suspect's car then ran off the road, and all four women were taken into custody.
State Police point out it was Christiansburg's call, but say the chase was justified.

The four women who are in their twenties face a number of charges.
The driver Shelia Williams is charged with felony attempt to elude, felony shoplifting, reckless driving and assault on a state police trooper.
Ruth Barrett, Shelitta Williams, and Shalinda Hairston are all face felony conspiracy to commit grand larceny.

Police tell us the women allegedly stole two thousand dollars worth of merchandise.

Social Security recipients are getting a pay raise next year, but the money won't go very far.
Benefits are rising two-point-seven percent, or about 25- dollars a month.
But, higher Medicare premiums are expected to eat up nearly HALF the increase.
The increase is the largest since benefits rose by three- and- a- half percent in 2001.

State educators say Virginia's high school seniors are making the grade on the Standards of Learning.

That was the first year students were required to pass the S-O-L tests to earn a diploma.

An Austrian daredevil took his freefall adventures to new heights in Croatia, by successfully jumping into a 625- foot cave.
BASE jumper Felix Baumgartner's leap lasted only seven-and-a-half seconds.
It required impeccable timing to avoid hitting the rocky sides of the cave, while releasing the parachute before reaching the bottom.
BASE jumpers routinely throw themselves off buildings, bridges and cliffs-- and open their parachutes at the last second.
